Welcome! My name is Brittany Schreiber, and I will be your Psychology 101 professor this semester. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with you as we explore the fascinating field of psychology together.
A Little About Me:
I am a Certified School Psychologist with over four years of experience in educational settings. I am currently pursuing a PsyD in School-Community Psychology at Hofstra University and hold a MSED in School Psychology from Long Island University. In addition to my academic work, I’m also a 200-hour certified yoga teacher and integrate mindfulness and stress-relief techniques into my teaching.
I have a deep passion for helping others understand human behavior and mental health, and I’m excited to share my knowledge and experience with you in our class. My approach is student-centered, and I strive to create an interactive and engaging classroom environment where you feel comfortable asking questions and exploring the material.
What to Expect in Class:
In our Psychology 101 course, we will cover the fundamentals of psychology, including key concepts in human behavior, mental processes, cognitive development, and social interactions. The course is designed to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the field and to encourage you to think critically about the ways psychology influences our everyday lives.
I bring a practical, real-world perspective to the material, drawing from my experience as a school psychologist and my work with individuals of all ages. Together, we’ll explore topics like:
- Theories of learning and development
- Mental health and well-being
- Cognitive processes such as memory and decision-making
- Behavioral and emotional disorders
- Research methods in psychology
I also believe in making psychology relevant to your everyday experiences. We’ll use case studies, group discussions, and activities that will help you apply what you’re learning to the real world.
My Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that everyone has the potential to succeed in psychology, regardless of background or prior knowledge. My teaching style is interactive, supportive, and inclusive. I encourage active participation and aim to create an environment where all students feel valued and heard.
I also use mindfulness techniques, such as brief meditation and relaxation exercises, to help students manage stress and stay focused during lectures. This is just one way I try to make the classroom experience enjoyable and beneficial for everyone.
Outside the Classroom:
In addition to my role as a professor, I am a School Psychologist at Laddie Decker Sound Beach School, where I work with students to support their academic, emotional, and social development. I also have worked with students in various school settings, including middle schools, high schools, and elementary schools.
When I’m not teaching or working with students, I enjoy leading yoga and mindfulness sessions, volunteering in the community, and participating in the Positive Psychology Clinic at Hofstra.
Research Interests:
I am deeply interested in conducting research in the areas of neuropsychology, positive psychology, spirituality, gratitude, addiction, depression, and anxiety.
